Tottenham have secured the long-term future of their captain, Cristian “Cuti” Romero, with the Argentine centre-back putting pen to paper on a new contract that runs until 2029.
Paul O’Keefe was first to report that Romero had agreed fresh terms, with Fabrizio Romano confirming the deal is “all done and sealed.” The World Cup winner had already made the decision in June to commit his future to Spurs, despite reported interest from Atlético Madrid earlier in the summer.
Romero has been a cornerstone of Tottenham’s defence since joining in 2021 and has since established himself as one of the Premier League’s most aggressive and commanding centre-backs. His leadership qualities were recognised when he was handed the Spurs captaincy last season, a role in which he has thrived.
New manager Thomas Frank sees Romero as a fundamental part of his project, and the club made it a priority to tie him down to a new long-term deal.
Romero’s new contract will keep him at Spurs through the peak years of his career, and at just 27, the defender has already lifted the World Cup with Argentina, the Copa América, and the Europa League with Spurs.
This extension is another clear signal of Tottenham’s intent to build their future around key leaders – with Romero, Palhinha, Bentancur and Micky van de Ven all set to form the backbone of Frank’s side.
