Thomas Frank Reacts to North London Derby Victory: “This Was Not a Friendly”

Tottenham 1-0 Arsenal | Hong Kong Stadium | Pre-Season Friendly

In only his second game in charge, Thomas Frank has already claimed his first North London Derby victory, as Tottenham edged Arsenal 1-0 in front of a sellout crowd at the Hong Kong Stadium. But make no mistake — this wasn’t just a pre-season runout. Speaking after the match, Frank made it clear: “This was not a friendly. It felt like a competitive match. I think if you saw it, you know it was competitive.”

The Dane was delighted with his team’s defensive commitment and organization, something he’s clearly been instilling in the group since taking charge. “We’ve been working hard on the combination of defensive organization — high pressure, middle, and low — but also that desire to keep a clean sheet, because that gives you a big opportunity to win football matches,” he said.

“Unbelievable Goal” – Praise for Pape Matar Sarr

Tottenham’s match-winner came courtesy of a stunning strike from Pape Matar Sarr, who continues to catch Frank’s eye. “Unbelievable goal. Fantastic. Well taken and all the credit to Pape,” said the head coach. “He’s impressed me, I must admit. He’s been really good in the last four weeks.”

Psychological Boost Ahead of the New Season

Frank acknowledged the wider importance of such a result: “All the positive results or performances you can get just reinforce the messages we try to get into the players. The desire to defend was good. First half we played very well. Second half we defended a bit too much, but we were still dangerous, especially from set-pieces.”

His in-game communication with assistant Justin Cochrane was also highlighted, as the pair were seen regularly calling players over for tactical tweaks. “It could be in our phase one build-up — maybe when Micky [van de Ven] dropped a bit lower — or Lucas being a little higher when going long. Small tactical instructions,” he explained.

Praise for Kudus’ Impact and Work Rate

Mohammed Kudus, one of Frank’s key new signings, also impressed in the derby. “I think he was really good today,” Frank noted. “His hold-up play, getting out of tricky situations, one-on-one skills, and creating opportunities — it was top class. On top of that, he’s working extremely hard. There was one recovery run from a set-piece where he sprinted all the way back and won the ball back. He helps the team so much — and I think the fans will be very excited.”

Clarity on Captaincy Still to Come

A notable post-match moment saw Cristian Romero place the captain’s armband on Heung-Min Son in front of the travelling fans, prompting questions about the permanent skipper. Frank was cautious: “That is to be confirmed. I haven’t taken the decision yet. I like to understand the group and the players a little bit more. I know I need to make a decision before the first official game against PSG in the Super Cup.”

Hong Kong Impresses the Boss

Despite the trip being planned before his appointment, Frank gave a glowing review of Spurs’ Hong Kong experience. “Yeah, definitely I’d consider coming back. It’s been perfect. Just see the sellout tonight — fantastic fans. All the things that had to be arranged have just been spot on,” he said. “The training pitch has been good, hotel very good, and of course the stadium here is excellent.”

Frank also touched on the significance of the fan presence: “I think I have a good idea, but you don’t really know before you step into it. Seeing how important it is for the fans — those waiting every day for us, coming to open training, and here at the game — you understand more and more how big a club Tottenham is and what it means to people.”

On Dominic Solanke and Christian Nørgaard

Frank confirmed Dominic Solanke is “getting closer” to returning, adding, “We’ll see if it’s close enough for Newcastle. If not, I’m positive for Bayern.” He also shared a touching moment about his former player, Christian Nørgaard — now with Arsenal. “I’ve known him since he was 15. He’s 31 now. I coached him for 12 years, probably played more than 300 games for me. It was strange seeing him in the other team, but I’m happy he got this opportunity late in his career.”

With a win over fierce rivals Arsenal and his side showing strong signs of tactical discipline and unity, Thomas Frank’s Tottenham tenure is off to a flying start. Up next? The Thomas Frank era officially begins when Spurs face PSG in the Super Cup. And by then, we’ll know who leads the squad out as captain.
