Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt a devastating blow just days before the new season begins, with confirmation that star midfielder James Maddison will undergo surgery for a ruptured ACL in his right knee. The England international is expected to be sidelined for six to seven months, as reported by Fabrizio Romano. Spurs will now be forced to re-evaluate their midfield options for the 2025/26 campaign.
Further injury concerns continue to mount for Thomas Frank, with Dejan Kulusevski also ruled out for the first month of the season, according to Ryan Taylor. The Swedish winger’s absence further highlights the growing need for depth in attacking areas.
Transfer Strategy Adjustments
Despite early interest, Spurs will not pursue a move for Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott, having held only initial discussions. The club has instead shifted its focus to Bilal El Khannouss, with The Times reporting the young Moroccan playmaker is being closely monitored as a potential option to fill the creative void left by Maddison.
Spurs’ interest in Nico Paz of Como has also drawn attention. Italian outlet Di Marzio claimed a €40m bid had been rejected, but club sources have strongly denied any formal offer was submitted. Real Madrid retain a 50% sell-on clause or match rights on Paz, complicating any negotiations.
Maghnes Akliouche of Monaco has also been scouted, although Ryan Taylor notes it is unclear whether he is an active target at this stage.
Meanwhile, Tottenham have reopened talks with Manchester City for James McAtee, according to Graham Bailey. McAtee has just one year left on his deal and is seen as a viable option for the attacking midfield role.
Brahim Diaz & Other Forward Options
Spanish media suggest Brahim Diaz is also under consideration. The Moroccan international notched six goals and eight assists for Real Madrid last season, and Spurs are reportedly intrigued by his creative profile.
While Heung-min Son is nearing a move to LAFC, Spurs are not planning to directly replace him unless another attacker also departs, as per the Gold & Guest podcast. Wilson Odobert has caught Frank’s eye and may be integrated more heavily instead of pursuing an external replacement.
Another surprising name being tracked is Savinho, the Manchester City winger who signed for the club only last year for over £30m. Spurs are reportedly exploring the possibility of a move.
Defensive Outlook
At the back, Kota Takai will remain with the first team unless Radu Dragusin returns to full fitness before the end of the window, according to Alasdair Gold. Meanwhile, Tottenham remain on alert regarding Illia Zabarnyi, with Le Equipestating Spurs will move quickly if PSG fail to secure the Bournemouth defender. Spurs are ready to match the €70m asking price.
